QUIZ GAMES

Test your knowledge of African affairs and climate change with our quiz games, created by artist and workshop leader at Ubuntu Museum, Jackie Mwanza. Over the past two years, she has expanded this part of the programme by drawing inspiration from Pan-African literature and climate-related news. Mwanza has also incorporated upcycled materials — such as discarded books, stationery, and repurposed packaging — into the creation of her quiz game resources. She finds it especially rewarding to create artwork without having to buy new materials, particularly during times when finances have been limited. The quiz games, in this format, are part of the upgrades introduced with the launch of The Eco Mask Workshop 2.0.

02.

BE INSPIRED

Be inspired by the masks of African artist Romuald Hazoumè, from our collection of his art books. “His masks which use salvaged material and bidons, or plastic jerry cans, comment on pan African politics and culture.” (A, Magnin 2018) Hazoumè masks do not carry the significance assigned to more sacred traditional ones, but he has his own point to makes and it touches on social issues like the pervasive reach and impact of Western-generated consumer culture on African countries.

MASK MAKING

With inspiration from Hazoumè’s masks, workshop participants will be invited to create their own masks using salvaged household packaging from Mwanza’s interactive art piece Plastic Haven. The installation consists mainly of plastic waste from food, drink, tissues, and other items consumed by the artist in her daily life. As participants use the materials and the artist replenishes them, the piece continues to evolve. Mwanza jokes, “In Plastic Haven, all is forgiven — big and small carbon footprints alike. No carbon credits for sale, though — you’ll have to stay on Earth for that.” (Note to client: Please set aside adequate space and furniture for crafting, based on the anticipated number of participants.)
